Accountability is one of the measuring tools to determine a leader’s effectiveness. As a leader your team will trust you when accountability is evident and consistent. By being accountable you will create a culture of accountability. How to build a culture of accountability is through three methods. First, you must hold yourself accountable. That is taking ownership of your decisions and actions. It takes a mature leader to admit their faults and mistakes. Second, hold those you lead accountable for their job responsibilities, actions, and decisions as well. At times this may be difficult, but it is necessary. Thirdly, hold yourself accountable to others whether it is to those you lead, your internal and external constituents, shareholders, and stakeholders. You are accountable even to the public as a leader to ensure your organization adheres to your stated mission, values, and principles. Courtney Lynch sums up accountability by stating“leaders inspire accountability through their ability to accept responsibility before they place blame.” The question is will you inspire accountability when the moment and opportunity arise.

Questions to consider:

  1. Do you take ownership of your actions and decisions?
  2. Do you hold our team accountable?
