When you think you have nothing to learn then you are destined for destruction. Everyone has areas that they must continue to grow and develop. Life is all about continuous learning and becoming better in those fundamental principles that make the difference between being an average leader to being an outstanding leader. The question is which are you determined to become? It takes intentionality to grow as a leader, but you cannot grow your leadership skills without growing personally. Your ability to lead stems from who you are as a person. Thus, I offer you three skills that everyone must continue to grow and develop.

Human Relation: Human relations skills are the most crucial factor when leading. If you are effective in building relationships with those you lead as well as those you work with then you have positioned yourself to become a great leader. You must first learn the art of valuing others and that is through respect for all. If you value a person, then you can add value to them and you will become valuable to them as well. To value a person is genuinely caring about the person by respecting them in the way you interact and communicate with them as well as how you treat them. I highly encourage you to focus on growing in the area of human relations skills in every aspect of your life (work, home, family, friends, colleagues, associates, etc.) It is those leaders that master human relations skills will have a significant impact in leading others.

Emotional Intelligence: Another important skill that everyone can continue to grow in is emotional intelligence. It is the ability to manage your emotions, and to be aware of the emotions of others. First you must be honest with yourself in terms of your emotions and what you are feeling in different situations. As a leader’s emotions are part of everyday life and you have to know how to manage your emotions in different situations. The higher you rise in an organization the greater the more awareness and control of your emotions you must possess. In addition, you must recognize how your emotions impact others. Most importantly, your ability to possess empathy for others is significant in leading or any type of relationship. If you lack empathy, you will miss opportunities to have a positive impact on those you lead as well as around you.

Adaptability: Nothing stays the same, thus it is inevitable that change is constant. If you possess a growth mindset and a willingness to stay flexible and adaptable you can navigate times of uncertainty with resilience and agility. If you possess and execute a strategic plan with an open mind, then you can achieve greatness. When the time arises unexpectedly that you have to change course, and you are willing to do so with calculated risks then you will survive. Always remember the words H. Jackson Brown, Jr. “you can’t change the wind, but you can adjust your sail.”

Finally, it is good practice to take time to think about areas that you would like to grow and develop in as you lead. These areas are applicable in life as well and as you continue to grow in these three areas you will continue to have a profound impact on the lives of those you work with and lead.
