As a first-year college athlete I played collegiate basketball for the University of North Texas. I possessed speed, agility, and a great mid-range jumper. As a first-year student I was awarded the opportunity to start as a first-year student athlete beating out the senior point guard. Yet after the first five games I found myself losing my starting position to the senior guard whose skills were much more refined as well as she possessed experience that I didn’t have. I said all of this to make a point that leadership is the same way. Leadership is a skill that must be developed just as I needed the time to take the time to develop and refine my skills in the game of basketball. Whether you possess an innate proclivity to lead or you find yourself in leadership; leadership is a skill that you must develop. There are a plethora of reasons why you must develop your leadership skills. Below, I want to offer four.
- Leadership Impacts Others: Leaders affect team morale, productivity, and shape the organizational culture. Leaders impact those they lead through decision making, the way in which they communicate to their team, how they manage conflict and most importantly how leaders manage their emotional intelligence. When leaders do not take the time to develop their leadership skills, despite their intent of well-meaning they can create confusion or conflict.
- Adaptability Is Essential: Today’s work environments are constantly evolving. Effective leaders must continuously grow to adapt to new challenges, technologies, and team dynamics. If leaders do not embrace the notion that change is constant and is inevitable with a refusal to learn and develop. These types of leaders will fall by the way and become ineffective when it comes to leading changes within their organization. When changes are made it takes leaders that are willing to learn, grow and develop. Leaders that embrace lifelong learning as a mantra and a necessity are positioned to lead the changes within their organization.
- Confidence Comes with Competence: Developing leadership skills builds the confidence to make decisions, communicate clearly, and lead with authenticity—even in tough situations. When leaders learn and develop their leadership skills, confidence is the outcome. Confidence is grounded in competence. When you know something, you are confident because you are knowledgeable. Thus, leaders that are confident stem from their knowledge base. For example, when leaders learn the process of how to effectively communicate or how to manage conflict it increases their confidence in those areas by applying the strategies learned.
- Drives Results and Vision: Strong leadership turns ideas into action. Developing these skills ensures leaders can align their team with a shared vision and drive meaningful results. The ultimate goal for leaders is to achieve results. Whether it is increasing profits, cutting costs, growing market share and so forth, these goals are good, but the question becomes what methodology are goals achieved. Therefore, leaders must lead in a manner that will drive results but not drive people away from the company, drive results but not drive people in the ground and drive results but not drive innovation and creativity out of the people. As a leader I learned that driving results were crucial to what was considered being a successful leader, but I had to learn that achieving results are the byproducts of efficient processes, building high performing teams, and being an effective leader. Therefore, this came through my learning the art of leading.
I love the Olympics because we get an opportunity to witness the outcome of the time the athletes spent training, developing, and mastering their craft. Leadership is a skill that must be developed which positions you to positively impact the lives of those you lead and the organization. In conclusion, Leadership is not something you are simply born with or handed through a job title—it is a skill that must be intentionally developed. Like any other skill, it requires practice, reflection, and a willingness to grow. Whether you are leading a team or just starting your journey, investing in your leadership abilities can unlock your potential and elevate those around you.
